Stratocell® foam is the perfect option if you need packaging that combines reliable cushioning performance with cost-effective pricing.
Stratocell® is a closed-cell, low density polyethylene (LDPE) foam engineered primarily for protective packaging and industrial applications. Manufactured by Sealed Air, it is clean, lightweight, non-abrasive, water-resistant, insulative and features a structured layer construction. Its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio also means Stratocell® can help reduce overall pack weight and size, minimising shipping costs and transport emissions. Crucially, and unlike expanded polystyrene, its structure also provides the same level of protection across multiple impacts.
Polyformes is an official supplier and converter of Stratocell®, being an official Sealed Air UK partner. As well as providing material, we can design and manufacture custom end caps, dunnage and Stratocell foam packaging tailored to your exact requirements. Please speak with our foam experts for free advice.
Stratocell® LDPE foam is available in four standard densities: 16, 22, 28, and 35 kg/m³ (often designated as Stratocell® L, E, S, and H, respectively). A specialist 65 kg/m³ material (Stratocell® 65) is also available.
Stratocell® AS is an anti-static (pink) grade with a density of 28 kg/m³. This grade is highly effective for dissipating electrostatic charges and protecting sensitive products requiring ESD (electrostatic discharge) protection across the electronics, automotive, medical, and aerospace industries.
For projects requiring a high environmental standard, specialty Stratocell® R contains at least 50% recycled material while remaining 100% recyclable.
For further details regarding individual material grades, please view the specific pages/datasheets.
Polyformes can split/skive, laminate and butt-weld Stratocell® planks to the specific dimensions you require. MOQs may apply to certain size/material options.

Stratocell® material offers the following beneficial properties:

Stratocell® is waterproof thanks to its closed-cell structure, meaning individual cells, or “bubbles,” are not connected. The material structure prevents water absorption, making it buoyant, moisture-proof, and highly resistant to mould, rot, and mildew growth.
While both are closed-cell polyethylene foams, the difference between Ethafoam® and Stratocell® is that Sealed Air, the manufacturer, produces them. Ethafoam® is a solid, extruded plank foam that is highly dense and rigid, making it typically more suited to heavier-duty applications. Stratocell®, by contrast, is a laminated foam made by heat-bonding multiple thin layers together. This process makes Stratocell® lighter, slightly more flexible, more cost-effective, and easier to convert into standard commercial packaging.
Stratocell® packaging foam is fully recyclable as it uses low-density polyethylene (LDPE, resin identification code 4) in its manufacture. Being non-cross-linked means it is easy to melt and repurpose in any recycling stream that accepts flexible PE foams. Please note, however, that Stratocell® is not currently accepted in UK kerbside collections.
Standard Stratocell® is not anti-static, but a specialist pink anti-static grade (Stratocell® AS) is available. This version uses chemical additives to dissipate electrostatic charges, making it safe for packaging sensitive circuit boards, microchips, and electronic components.

Stratocell® is a highly resilient, closed-cell extruded and laminated polyethylene (PE) foam material. The manufacturer, Sealed Air, uses a unique heat-bonding process that thermally laminates multiple thin layers of extruded low-density polyethylene (LDPE) into a solid, multi-directional protective foam.
Stratocell® can achieve similar protective cushioning performance as standard or cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) while being significantly lighter and using up to 35% less raw material. It is also chemically inert and highly resistant to water, oils, and chemicals.
Stratocell® sheets are typically supplied in large, uniform sizes (most commonly around 2000mm x 1200mm) with thicknesses ranging from 20mm to 100mm. However, Polyformes can split, skive and butt weld to produce material at the exact sizes required. We can also saw, die-cut, heat-bond, and machine the sheets to create bespoke foam packaging tailored to specific products and applications.
Regardless of the foam material, product or packaging your business uses or needs, at Polyformes, we have the people, knowledge, equipment and relationships to make it happen.
