Foam Packaging

If you need single-trip protection for high-value or fragile goods, foam packaging is a reliable, trusted option.

Foam packaging, including end caps, foam inserts for boxes, linings and even moulded items, is a cost-effective option for protecting fragile, delicate or high-value items during shipping. Using materials such as Stratocell or Ethafoam, foam packaging absorbs shock, prevents damage to product surfaces and is lightweight (so as not to incur excessive shipping costs). Typically used with corrugated (cardboard) packaging, its low cost makes it ideal for single-trip applications.

At Polyformes, we have been successfully manufacturing custom foam packaging inserts for more than four decades. Our material knowledge, in-house foam conversion equipment, and expert design team mean we can create custom foam packaging tailored to your business and industry.

FAQs

Most foam materials, including those used to manufacture foam packaging, are recyclable at specialist facilities. However, no packing foam is currently collected in household recycling schemes in the UK (largely because the bulk in transit makes it difficult to process).

Foam packaging can provide several environmental benefits. Firstly, it reduces weight in transit, reducing emissions. By preventing damage to goods and products, it also reduces the environmental costs of damaged items sent to landfills and the additional emissions required to ship replacements, etc. There are also packaging foams available with 30-100% recycled content.

Due to its balance of cost and performance, foam packaging, such as end caps, blocks and edge protectors, is widely used for single-trip packaging applications. Certain materials, such as Ethafoam and Stratocell, are perfectly suited to one-time use, whereas others, such as Plastazote, are better suited to repeated, long-term use.

To choose the right foam density, an experienced designer will first consider the weight and fragility of your product, as well as the likely handling and transport conditions. However, low-density foams are generally best for lightweight, fragile items like electronics or glassware that need gentle cushioning, whilst high-density foam grades are required for heavy, industrial, or sharp objects to provide adequate support and protection.
