CNC Foam Routing

CNC routing can create any high-precision foam inserts or products your business requires.

CNC foam routing is a computer-controlled machining process that uses a router bit to cut and shape foam materials. It converts digital designs into 3D foam products with high precision, exceptional repeatability, and consistency.

At Polyformes, we rout more polyethylene foam inserts than any other UK company. Our equipment with variable bed sizes enables us to produce exceptionally large pieces for industrial and commercial customers, whilst machines with up to four heads allow efficient, fast manufacturing. Two of our CNC routing machines also feature reciprocating knife attachments for cutting and shaping parts after CNC machining.

Advantages

Benefits of CNC routing

The benefits of using CNC routed foam include:

Exceptional precision, accuracy and repeatability.
Tolerances as tight as ±0.8mm (depending on material/design).
Allows for 3D contouring of complex, intricate shapes.
Cost-effective for one-offs and prototypes, with no tooling costs.
Efficient production for short lead times and high quality.
Software optimises material use to reduce waste.
Ability to produce very small/large designs for industrial applications.

FAQs

CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control. It is a manufacturing process in which pre-programmed software moves a router (or other tool) to cut or remove material in a controlled manner, creating a specific 3D shape or recess.

CNC routing is suitable for shaping mid- to high-density closed-cell foams, including those manufactured from polyethylene. Plastazote® in particular provides excellent results when routed, with clean, precise edges and shapes.

The CNC routing process follows a digital-to-physical workflow. First, a 3D model is created using software such as Alphacam. Software then converts the 3D model into a set of specific coordinates and instructions that tell the machine exactly where to move, how fast to spin, and how deep to cut. Finally, the CNC router follows those coordinates, moving a high-speed spindle along three axes to carve the foam block into the final part.

The terms routing and machining foam are largely interchangeable when talking about foam conversion. The process may also be referred to as foam profiling, CNC cutting, or even milling.
